Covington County’s chapter of the University of Alabama’s National Alumni Association will hold its 15th annual Alabama Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament on Mon., June 18, at the Andalusia Country Club.

The goal of the tournament is to raise money to fund the chapter’s eight scholarships with special attention being given to our newest scholarship in honor of Jeanice and Jimmy Kirkland, which benefits the Kirklands, chapter member Keron Kyzar said.

“The more money we raise, the more we’re able to contribute to local scholarships,” she said. “That’s what this is all about — to generate funds to help students go to the University of Alabama.”

The golf tournament is a three-person scramble, and it costs $300 per team. The team can consist of three men, three women or mixed.

Teams will be pre-flighted by the average handicaps of partners, not to exceed three strokes above the lowest handicap. The tournament fee is $100 per person, or $300 for the three-person team. The fee includes a mulligan (free shot), No. 13 ladies tee advance, lunch, tailgate party after the tournament and eligibility for door prizes.

Registration for the tournament begins at 11 a.m., lunch is served at 11:45 and the tournament will begin at 1 p.m. on a shot gun start.

After the tournament, players, kids and anyone interested will have the opportunity to meet, have their picture made with the guests and get autographs from Alabama basketball, baseball and football radio broadcaster Chris Stewart; Will Lowery, a member of the 2011 National Championship football team; and a later addition, Baron Huber, who played on the 2009 championship football team. Stewart is also the host of the Nick Saban Show, which runs on Sundays after game days.

Stewart will intereview Huber and Lowery during the dinner regarding their football careers at UA, and all three will field questions from the audience afterward. Massey Automotive is sponsoring the speakers.

Additional tailgate party tickets are $20 per person, and reservations need to be made by Fri., June 15.

“There are many ways to participate in our annual scholarship golf tournament,” Kyzar said. “You can be a tournament sponsor, you can play golf, you can come to the tailgate party after the tournament, or you can make a contribution to one of our local scholarships.”

There are eight scholarships the chapter’s golf tournament funds. They are the Vernon L. St. John Endowed Scholarship, which benefits an Opp High School graduate; the F. Murland Smith Memorial Scholarship, which benefits a graduate from one of the four county high schools; the Susan Jeanice Kirkland Memorial Scholarship, which benefits an Andalusia High School graduate; the James and Jenelle Kelsoe Scholarship, which benefits a transfer student from LBWCC; the Kathy Nall Memorial Scholarship, which benefits an Andalusia High School graduate; the Gordan Griffin Sikes Memorial Scholarship, which benefits an Andalusia High School graduate; the Levi Neal Memorial Scholarship, which benefits a Red Level High School graduate; and the Jeanice and Jimmy Kirkland Memorial Scholarship, which benefits a

Covington County graduate.

The chapter awards more than $15,000 in scholarships annually.
